Self Care for the Self-Employed

In today’s society, it’s all about being active… Active online, in your community, in the gym, in the work place, etc. Maybe we work too hard, or perhaps some of us even justify the lack of working as “self care.” Regardless of where you fall on the self care meter, I’m here to tell you that taking time for yourself is one of the most difficult (& rewarding) concepts to put into practice. It’s all about balance, and in today’s world, it’s easy to lose our footing on the self care balance beam. Here are 5 things I do at various times each week that help me de-stress, unwind and smile…

  1. I put away my phone for at least 2 hours a day.

Sounds silly and very obvious, I know. But it’s hard!!! We’re so addicted to those little screens and when you’re a full time Realtor, it becomes even more addicting. Setting out a specific hour each day to leave my phone behind has helped me tremendously. You should try it!

  2. I listen to uplifting music when I start to feel anxious.

Ok after this blog post, you all are going to think I’m crazy! LOL! But in all seriousness, I struggle daily with anxiety. Music has helped calm me in my most stressful moments and I’m forever grateful for DIRECTV’s music channels. *Channel 857 for Soundscapes ;)

    3. I shower.

I shower regularly yes, but sometimes I shower even when I’m clean just to “feel better.” I can’t be the only one that enjoys a scalding hot shower and a good cry??? If you’ve never done that, next time you’re upset- jump in the shower. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

    4. I read/write.

Reading and writing both help me escape and forget about life’s stressors. I enjoy bouncing around from book to book, depending on what I feel like reading at that moment in time. Writing is the same way. I have various unnamed blog posts that I frequently re-visit when taking time to reflect (this is one of them LOL). Sometime this week I encourage you to visit Half Price Books, find a good read and a cool new notebook. You deserve it!

    5. I pray.

I’m never one to post religious content, but I don’t think I can stay silent any longer! God has worked in incredible ways throughout mine and Christopher’s life. I truly feel God’s support daily and I want to give 100% credit to Him alone. He has a way of turning tradegy into triumph, and my family is a living example of that promise. Through personal life experiences, I know that He is always in control. I find myself saying at various times throughout the day, “I am a child of God.” I know that sounds super cheesy, but it really helps me find a deep sense of peace and confidence when I’m feeling overwhelmed. I’m grateful for Jesus, I’m grateful for His role in everyone’s life, and I’m so blessed I want to sing it from the freakin’ rooftops! LOL! I’m sure I’ll eventually write a personal blog post testimony thing… But for now, let’s just all practice self care and try and be happy with the cards life has dealt us, OK? If you’re going through a rough time, know that your great moments are coming. I hope you find rest in that.
